Courage. In a time of uncertainty and anxiety, courage is a virtue that is sorely needed. How is it we develop, with the help of God’s grace, this virtue of courage?

Perhaps if we think about what a virtue is, the answer might become a little clearer to us. A virtue is a repeated good action done in such a way that it becomes a way of living for us.

Here’s an example relating to another virtue, honesty. How do we exercise the virtue of honesty? By repeatedly being honest, so that it is not just a once and a while action, but becomes deeply rooted in our identity.

So to be courageous is not simply a one time thing. Developing the virtue of courage means being courageous over and over again, so that it becomes absorbed in our identity as humans made in the image and likeness of God. So for Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, what we read in today’s first reading is the not first time they were courageous. No, they had already developed the habit of being courageous, so that when today’s significant test came for them, they were able to respond with confidence because of the grace of God in their hearts.

Let us pray.

Dear Jesus, We know that the times we live in right now are times that call for courage. We need to face the pandemic, especially in the actions we are called to make, with the courage that comes to us through your grace. Enter our hearts and souls, so that we may do those things that are needed so we can witness to the power of your love. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
