Ever wonder why God changed the name Abram to Abraham? Since it is recorded in the Book of Genesis, it must have represented something significant. And it does.
Abram means “Father is exalted.” Abraham means ‘Father of the multitude.” In Abraham’s life, it is easy to see how one leads to the other. The name Abram suggests, and in the Book of Genesis we see, that Abraham was always a righteous man. And because of this righteousness, Abraham becomes the father of many nations.
So, in his life Abraham moves from better to best. As Abram, he showed forth by the way he lived a tremendous faithfulness to God. When called to leave his homeland, it is because of his generosity that he goes where he goes. As Abraham, he shows forth the covenant with God as something altogether unbelievable, but true. Abraham helps us to learn just how awesome our God is.
Let us pray.
Dear Jesus, Even though we know you are great and loving, and that you know what is best for us, we do not always listen. We do not always follow you to the good place you have prepared for us. But when we do follow you, we find great blessings in doing so. Even though you have poured out your gifts upon us, you show us your abundant nature. You give us more. Help us to follow you unreservedly. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
