God makes a difference.

What difference does it make? Have you ever felt this way? Wondering if what you are doing is making any difference at all? We are currently in such a time right now. We are “social distancing” against a virus we cannot see. Does it make any difference?

Isaiah the prophet reminds us that such a feeling is normal. We can wonder what difference we are making when we do not see any tangible results.

Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength, Yet my reward is with the LORD, my recompense is with my God.

For in the spiritual life, we can feel that the sacrifices we are making may not be resulting in a difference. But God’s grace can be like the virus, insofar as we cannot see God’s grace. We cannot always see an immediate effect.

Faith is often like this. It is in giving we receive. It is in loving enemies and praying for persecutors that we witness to God’s love. We often encounter Christ without knowing him, for he is dwelling in every other human being.

Today, seek to witness to the grace and faith that you may not even know is present in you. Know that an authentic witness to your relationship with Jesus impacts more people than you are aware. And when you are feeling that your faith life is making no difference, recite this prayer. “Yes, Lord, I do believe. Help my unbelief!”

Let us pray.

Dear Jesus, Because of our sin, we often become discouraged. We live our faith, but we cannot always see the difference you are making in the world. Sometimes we cannot even see any difference in ourselves. During this week we call Holy, help us to see more clearly your presence in our lives and in the world.  We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
