Genesis 3:15 is sometimes referred to as the “protogospel”. That is, the first gospel. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers.” In other words, this is the first promise of a redeemer. And this promise tells us the redeemer will be an offspring of the woman, of Mary, the Mother of God.
Mary, Mother of the Church

Genesis 3:15 is sometimes referred to as the “protogospel”. That is, the first gospel. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers.” In other words, this is the first promise of a redeemer. And this promise tells us the redeemer will be an offspring of the woman, of Mary, the Mother of God.

Today we celebrate a new feast. We celebrate Mary, the Mother of God, under the title, Mary, Mother of the Church. Pope Francis created this day to remind us of the intimate and important place Mary, the Mother of God, and our Mother, should have in our lives, and has in the Church.

The early Church had a deep and strong devotion to the Blessed Mother. Many Catholics do not realize that Muslims also revere the Mother of God. The constant and total “yes” she gave to God is constant and total assurance to us that she does, in everything, lead us to her Son, Jesus.

Get to know the Blessed Mother. Ask her to pray for you. Discover the prayers of devotion to the Blessed Mother. If praying the rosary is not a common practice for you, maybe today is the day to start.

While the members of the Church, even the leaders of the Church, can sin and be lead astray, we know that Mary, the Mother of God, keeps us safe and close when we seek her prayers.

From the first moments the Holy Spirit was poured out to the Church, Mary was present. She is with the apostles in the upper room. She is with them when their lives are turned upside down. Unlike the apostles, she did not leave her Son. She was present from the very conception of Jesus, at the Cross, for the Resurrection, and for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Seek her prayers for the Church today, for she is indeed the mother of all.

Let us pray.

Dear Jesus, you promised us the outpouring of your Holy Spirit. We know it was through the Holy Spirit that Mary, your Mother, conceived. As we celebrate her as Mother of the Church, help us to seek her help to be drawn closer to you. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
