It is all because God loves us.

I sin. And as a result, I deserve nothing from God. Everything, everything I receive from God is because of his grace. His free gift to me, given only because God loves me. And this is true for you too.

All the readings today at Mass were about love. The prophet Ezekiel speaks to us today about life. We can be raised from our graves by God because of love. We can live because God raises and heals us. Saint Paul tells us that the Spirit raises us. And the beautiful and compelling story of the raising of Lazarus reminds us that Jesus is the resurrection and the life, and that what Jesus did for Lazarus Jesus will also do for us if we believe.

We live at a time where death can feel all around us. This is not only because of the Coronavirus, but also because of the problems that exist in our world in addition to the Coronavirus. People die from hunger because people will not share. People flee their countries because they are scared and desperate. There are victims of crime because we have people who commit evil actions. And there are people who suffer in poverty, sickness, and loneliness.

But as powerful as these things seem, what is the lesson for us to take today? There is nothing more powerful than God. God is stronger than death. God is more powerful than evil.

That is why the image of Pope Francis blessing the world with the monstrance is so amazing. It was the ultimate sign of God’s power. As long as we are in relationship with the Christ, the Divine Son of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, we can trust in God’s love for us.

Let us pray.

Dear Jesus, You are stronger than sin and death. You are more powerful than sickness and violence. All you give to us is gift. Give us the grace to repent from our sins. Give us the grace to trust in you more fully. Help us to see that in your crucifixion is the act of love we can fully trust. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
