Don’t do just the minimum. Don’t slack. Don’t see what you can get by with. Don’t try to just “sneak into” heaven. Give your all.
You cannot just try a little for a relationship with Jesus. Any serious relationship, any significant friendship, requires that we are generous. We cannot be just a “sort of” friend. We have to go all in.
Jesus stresses this. It is not enough not simply not to kill, even getting angry is to be avoided. It is not enough just to love those who love us, we must witness to the power of the love of Jesus by loving enemies and those who work against us.
Our ability to grow in the spiritual life is related to our desire to seek a powerful relationship with Jesus. You need to open your heart to Jesus. You need to be willing to go where God leads. You need to be desirous of a life-giving changing relationship with Jesus.
During the season of Lent, the goal is a stronger relationship with Jesus and a greater love of neighbor. What do you need to commit to in your life for Jesus to come into your heart more fully?
Lent is a time for you to settle for nothing less than a powerful relationship with Jesus. That is what Jesus wants from you. He loves you more than you can imagine. He wants to give you deep fulfilment beyond anything you could imagine. All that is needed is your open heart, and a willingness to give your all.
Let us pray. Dear Jesus, Sometimes I become complacent. I look at commandments like not killing and think that since I have not killed anyone, I am good. But Jesus wants more from me. Jesus wants to make me fully the person he has created me to be. Help me, Lord. Help me to respond fully to your love. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
