The Power of Relationship
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
The first call we need to accept is the call to a relationship with Jesus. Too often we think the place to start might very well be principles. But when it comes to faith, there is tremendous power that comes from a relationship with Jesus.
Why is this? I think it is because we stand in need of relationships. It is often said we are social creatures, and I think that is because we are made in the image and likeness of God. God is relationship, and he made us for relationship, first and foremost with Him.
But that is not all. In the context of today’s gospel, it is not just a relationship with Jesus for today, but indeed forever. We do not need to find Jesus, because Jesus finds us. He is the way. And for us, the truth is not a set of principles, but is rather, a person.
This is the power of our relationship with Jesus. He is the source of what we believe, but more importantly he gives us the power to accept this relationship because of His grace. And once we have this powerful relationship with Jesus, it is then that we choose to live our lives in harmony with His will.
When we start with controversial topics, people get mad and angry, and few are convinced of the opposite position by mere words. But when the relationship with Jesus comes first, then indeed, we are able to have eternal life, for Jesus prepares a place for us.
