More than 15 years ago, the United States Bishops released their curriculum framework. The goal was to help students in Catholic schools to understand more fully that Jesus was not only fully human (which many students knew) but also to stress that Jesus if fully divine (which was not always apparent).

Jesus: Way, Truth, Life

Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. o one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

In my time working with people in developing their faith, it was clear that such an emphasis on the real meaning of the Incarnation was needed. But what I think became lost was the importance of a personal relationship with God. And if we have a personal relationship with the Son, then, by definition we have a personal relationship with the Trinity.

Today we celebrate Saints Philip and James. Both gave their lives for the faith. But today we encounter Philip at a time when he has not yet grasped who it is that Jesus really is. This comes on the heels of Thomas not understanding what it means to know the way.

To be sure, even if we have come to accept Jesus as the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, a relationship with Jesus is still a mystery. It is not possible for us to really understand what it means to have a relationship with God. But in today’s gospel we realize that we know how to get to Jesus, we know He is the truth, and we know that He has come so that we might have life in abundance.
