Today we recall the great truth about our God. Three persons. One God. Trinity. And there is no point trying to explain it. We only know this truth about God because God revealed it to us.
No one can fully explain God. Any attempt to try falls short and is probably heretical. The mystery of God is far beyond our small, puny brains to understand.
But the most important thing we can understand is that God is love. Love is who God is and what God does. Yet that is a mystery too. We sin. God loves. We turn away from God. God loves. We treat other human beings horribly. God loves.
As we look around at the world, now is the time we need God. In fact, we need God now more than ever. Despite the belief that we are “woke” or sophisticated, we still have not mastered the skill of loving each other. Look at the anger and hate in our world. Even though we are made in God’s image and likeness, even though all people are made in God’s image and likeness, we still do not understand it or live it.
But we do not need to look at our entire world. We do not live God’s love in our homes, neighborhoods, and streets. How often do we pass by the homeless? How often do we make judgements about others? How often do we discover that these judgements, about which we were so certain, are wrong?
Today we are reminded of a powerful challenge. If we are made in God’s image, if we are made in God’s likeness, that we know what it is we must do. If we were made like God, we need to act like God. Just as God loves, so too must we. Just as God forgives, so must we. Just as God pours himself out completely for the salvation of souls, so must we.
Let us pray.
Dear Jesus, today we celebrate God, three persons perfectly united in one substance. We know God is love, and God loves. As we consider the love of God, help us to become more like God in the way we love others. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
