It was once said to me that life is a series of beginnings and endings. We start something, but invariably it comes to an end. We finish something and can find ourselves sad until we begin something new.
When something ends before we want it to, we become quite sad, and perhaps angry as well. When we lose a job, especially unexpectedly, it often makes us angry. When someone we love dies of an illness or accident, we can become angry, even at God.
Beginnings and endings are a small reflection of the ultimate cycle of life and death. And in our existence here on earth, life and death are intimately connected. We give into the death of sleep to rise to a new day. We eat dead things in order to stay alive. And sometimes our most profound losses and failures produce the most growth in us.
But we know that because Jesus has conquered sin and death, ultimately our beginning and ending reside with the Holy Spirit. Life in the Spirit is embracing the newness Jesus calls us to and ending our sinfulness.
In what ways is God calling you to something new today? What is God calling you to let go of on this day? The message of Jesus is that we can embrace the Holy Spirit because we have his grace and love to help us to do so. And his mercy, love and forgiveness helps us to turn away from sin so that there is room in our heart and soul for Jesus.
Ask Jesus to help you to enter more deeply into a loving relationship with him today.
Let us pray.
Dear Jesus, your death put an end to sin and a beginning to new life. Help us by your loving presence to receive the Holy Spirit, so that we may turn away from sin and turn toward your love. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
