According to the plan of the Holy Spirit

When everything works according to plan, hard work is possible. We can travel incredible distances in short times because of planes, cars, trains and buses. We can lift heavy objects with the help of machines. Information can be processed faster than our ancestors could have imagined thanks to technology. Even at great distances, we can see and hear those we talk with on a phone or computer.

In fact, when everything works according to God’s plan, even the impossible is possible. How is it that Saint Paul will travel to Jerusalem despite warnings of his death?

He gives a simple yet profound answer. He is “compelled by the Spirit” and because of this his top priority is “finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the Gospel of God’s grace.”

Listen to Saint Paul’s description of the Gospel. It is the Gospel of God’s grace. Paul has faithfully preached the gospel not just because he was given the free gift by God to do so, but we too are given this gospel to believe by the same grace of God.

And so Saint Paul can go to Jerusalem because he knows he has the constant reassuring presence of the Holy Spirit. He knows that by following the promptings of the Holy Spirit, he is led into a magnificent life of an eternal, loving relationship with the Lord Jesus himself.

In the midst of uncertainty, we can receive the same assurance of the Holy Spirit too. While we may dream of having seen Jesus when he walked the earth, because Jesus ascended into heaven, we are able to experience the powerful revelation of the fullness of God, which shows to each one of us our destiny.

Let us pray.

Dear Jesus, by your ascension into heaven you made possible for each of us the coming of the Holy Spirit, the great Advocate you promised to give us. This allows us to experience the fullness of your revelation as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Help us to receive this gift. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
