The appearance that really matters
Right after telling Samuel not to judge by appearance, the first reading goes on to describe the marvelous appearance that David makes. But this is not the focus of the choice God makes. It is the appearance of David’s heart, something only God can judge. The gospel could give an appearance that Jesus did not care about Jewish Law. But that is not the correct appearance either. Sometimes we get too focused on our appearance, and we lose site of the appearance that really matters: our witness as disciples of Jesus.
