My mother and the holy Mother of God / Mi madre y la santa Madre de Dios

Homily for Wednesday January 1 2025

On this Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, I thought it might be helpful to consider first what it means to be a mother, and secondly what we celebrate that is specific to the motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Of course in thinking about what it means to be a mother, I think first of my own mother. There was never any doubt in my mind that my mother loved my father, my brother, my sister and me. When it came to being the mother of her children, she did whatever was necessary out of love and care.

Moreover, her life as a mother was not always easy, and that was not just because I was her son. She had children who died in miscarriage, and my sister to the extreme illness into which she was born.

And like my mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary had a very difficult series of events throughout her whole life. She had to travel a great distance while pregnant, she gave birth in a stable, and she and Joseph fled into Egypt to protect the life of her son.

But in her faith things were not always clear. Consider that at the presentation of Jesus, when she and Joseph are performing the necessary rituals at the beginning of Jesus’ life, she is told that a sword of sorrow will pierce her heart. She and Joseph lose Jesus when he stays behind in Jerusalem. She hears about all that is happening with Jesus, and certainly those times when things were not going so well. Like any mother, when she heard Jesus was working so hard he was not eating, she came to him with her relatives.

But in describing this event, there is an interesting line in the gospel. It says they came to get Jesus because they thought he was out of his mind. What level of worry Mary must have felt in loving her son Jesus.

And so Mary did not have an easy life. But she was a woman of total faith, who reflected on events and experiences deep within her heart. And while we do not have a really clear account of her prayer life, the experiences of Mary we gain in the gospels indicates she had a deep relationship with God, followed the law he set forth, and desired in all things to do his will.

As we celebrate Mary’s great cooperation with the will of God, we might wish to consider in what ways God is calling for the same generous response from us.
