We hold a treasure: Homily for Thursday, July 25, 2024

St. Paul tells us in the first reading that we hold a treasure. Have you ever thought about what gets held deep inside you? What is the treasure that we hold? What is it that we allow to govern our lives? Because while the treasure never disappears, our awareness of the treasure can in fact change the way we live.

We hold a treasure

Do you ever think of the deep spirit of God which dwells in you? Do you consider the priceless presence of God which dwells in your heart and soul? Do you find yourself thinking about how good it is that you exist, and what, with God’s help you can do and be? In the busy pace of life, it can be the case that we forget to look deep inside ourselves to find the presence of God.

St. Paul tells us in the first reading that we hold a treasure. Have you ever thought about what gets held deep inside you? What is the treasure that we hold? What is it that we allow to govern our lives? Because while the treasure never disappears, our awareness of the treasure can in fact change the way we live.

But we can also choose, as James and John did in this Gospel reading today, to allow ourselves to be filled, to push out in some ways, the room for the treasure by ambition. James and John, or maybe their mother, and James and John were just willing participants, the mother of James and John was the quintessential stage mother, I don’t know, but they wanted something really tremendous, but they didn’t have the treasure in mind.

Sitting at the right or the left hand of Jesus is obviously a great privilege, but for James and John, it’s only when they recognize the treasure that is put before them that they’re able to give their lives for the Lord Jesus.

What about us? Jesus tells us that where our heart is, there our treasure is also. Where is your treasure? Where is your heart? What is it that God is calling you to do this day? To share the powerful love that he has for each one of us? And what is it that God is calling you to do to make the treasure he has placed in your heart the top priority in your life?
