You are alive in Christ
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also,
through his Spirit dwelling in you.
Do you ever consider the power of your own baptism? Do you ever think about it? Have you ever reflected on where it leads? The truth is, it gives you life. Eternal life. You are alive in Christ.
Looking around the world, our country, and even our local community, it probably does not take long to see death. People die from illness. People die as victims of crime. People die in accidents. People die in war. And without a focus on what it means to be baptized, we can easily become discouraged.
And there can also be the type of death within us in becoming discouraged with our spiritual life. Perhaps it seems we are making no progress. Perhaps we become sad when we commit the same sins over and over again.
But at least in my own life, when I find myself becoming discouraged in these ways, it is usually because I focus too much on what I cannot do, and not enough on what God can do. I think I need to have more willpower, when what I really need is more grace.
And the grace of God is about life. It is about our being open to the grace that God pours our to us so that we can accomplish true conversion. Paul alludes to this when he compares a body dead in sin to the grace of God. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
Today you are invited by the Lord God Jesus Christ to life, be remembering your baptism, and more importantly the grace you received to become holy.
