Do as I say not as I do. So often when we encounter the Pharisees, they come across in a bad light. But when they discuss the Law, it is often the case they are right in following it. But what they miss is the main purpose of the Law. It is not about rules for their own sake, but for holiness. Jesus says essentially, "Do as I say not as I do" is the attitude of the Pharisees who get caught up in the honors that come from their position.

Homily given at Christian Brothers College High School, Town and Country, Missouri. Readings for Today. Listen to our other homilies.

In some ways, if we are not careful, Lent can become like that for us. We can get so caught up in our external observances and penances during Lent that we can forget their purpose: Holiness.
