King Herod can be a lot like us. He was attracted to the words of Saint John the Baptist, but he simply could not take the step to live the truth he was hearing. He probably had too much to drink and made promises he should not have kept. He thought too much about his image. He is a sad figure on the stage of history.

Given at Lasalle Retreat Center, Glencoe, Missouri. Readings for Today. Listen to our other homilies.

Herod: What if he were authentic?

King Herod can be a lot like us. He was attracted to the words of Saint John the Baptist, but he simply could not take the step to live the truth he was hearing. He probably had too much to drink and made promises he should not have kept. He thought too much about his image. He is a sad figure on the stage of history.

What if it had been different? What if he had followed what he heard that was attractive to him? What if instead of killing the messenger, he could have accepted his need to convert?

We can often be different people in different situations. Perhaps today the question we need to answer is this: Who are we, really?
