Meditations for the Time of Retreat
The Experience of De La Salle and Our Experience Today
In reading or listening to the Meditations for the Time of Retreat, we can lose the point if we do not consider how the words written in a previous time can impact us today. The externals of our lives are so much different today than they were in the time of De La Salle. At the same time, as with any great classic of spirituality, it can be the case that the wisdom of the ages becomes helpful for growth both for those in the time it was written, and for us today.
We can think that people were different in the 18th Century compared to people today. Obviously, there are many things that are different. And yet, are there not similar questions we wrestle with in our own lives today that were not all that much different from considerations of the 18th Century?
Questions to Consider
How is it that God is active in alive in my life today?
And as I read de la Salle, what strikes me about today that might be similar to what he faced in his time?
