Today’s gospel provides an outline to the pathway of becoming a disciple of Jesus. First, we learn about Jesus and the things he does. Then, when Jesus appears and Bartimaeus the blind man learns of it, he cries out for the Lord. Then, Jesus asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus has a ready answer: “I want to see.” Not only is he searching for a physical restoration of sight, which he receives, but something more — an understanding of what it means to follow Jesus.
