Looking Ahead: June 2-7, 2025

This week is a week of stress on the one hand, and consolation on the other. The first readings tend to focus on persecution and difficult questions. The gospels focus on the great consolation, love and peace that comes from Jesus.

Looking ahead. These days leading up to Pentecost unsurprisingly provide a focus on the Holy Spirit. What can be hard for some people is to take the “leap of faith” to actually have faith. This week’s readings focus on the Holy Spirit which enables us to accept the grace to believe.

Sometimes the words of our faith can become so familiar that we do not realize the faith that is behind them. In the first reading, we encounter people who do not comprehend the fullness of God’s revelation, as they do not even know there is a Holy Spirit. Do we let the words of faith become too familiar to us?

Today’s first reading and today’s gospel focus on faithful dedication to a mission. Both Saint Paul and Jesus focus on the reality that they have done what God has asked them to do. And they have not only done it, but they did so with enthusiasm and dedication.

It has been said that the life of celibacy is one where we are constantly saying hello and goodbye. And yet, in our ever increasingly mobile society, more and more of us are in the cycle of saying hello and goodbye. And of course we say hello to newborns and goodbye to those who have died. Jesus tells his followers to be as innocent as doves and a cunning as foxes. We get an example of this phrase in both the first reading and in the gospel. As Paul is on trial, he notices that an existing dispute between Sadducees and Pharisees can work to his advantage in preaching the gospel. Jesus reminds us that his ministry was one that bore fruit because of his devotion and connection to the Father.

When we truly convert and repent of our sins, God can do amazing things through us. Consider Saint Paul, who worked ceaselessly to kill Christians and thwart the new way of faith inspired by Jesus. Then came his conversion. Saint Peter could not admit he even knew Jesus, but today affirms his deep love for Jesus. These should provide each of us with hope that Jesus can do amazing things with us too.

It can be the case that sometimes we become more concerned about others and their way of life than we do about ourselves and our way of life. When we criticize, it is often when we see in others the behaviors we fight against in ourselves. We can speak boldly about condemning others when we are guilty of sin as well. When Saint Peter asks Jesus about the beloved disciple, he is reminded by Jesus about the important role of any disciple. He is told to follow Jesus.
