Looking Ahead: May 26-31, 2025

This week is a week of stress on the one hand, and consolation on the other. The first readings tend to focus on persecution and difficult questions. The gospels focus on the great consolation, love and peace that comes from Jesus.

Looking ahead. This week is a series of readings where waiting is a primary theme. For much of the week, the waiting will be focused on the arrival of the Holy Spirit. The week ends with the celebration of the Visitation of Mary, who was waiting on just what it would mean to be the Mother of God.

Today Lydia shows the value of hospitality. And in the midst of preaching and persecution, it is easy to see that the hospitality of a believer is welcome. It might challenge us to see if we exercise hospitality in such a way that it leads to people coming to believe in Jesus himself.

Can you imagine that prisoners would really pass up the opportunity to escape if it presented itself? Yet that is exactly what happened in today’s first reading. Having received the Holy Spirit in a powerful way, despite the opportunity, the prisoners stay and it provides the moment of evangelization.

It can be hard for us to realize that the early message of the gospel was quite the challenge to preach. We have become accustomed to the notion of the resurrection of Jesus. And because of this, it can be the case that for us the resurrection of Jesus can almost become ordinary. But we must always seek to find the transcendent experience of God in our lives.

The early preaching in the Church is difficult. Realizing the fulfillment of the Jewish Law, the apostles find preaching to the Jews to be challenging. They are arrested, persecuted, beaten and more. For us Gentiles, this turns out to be Good News indeed.

Sometimes feelings like jealousy and envy can be so strong they cause us to do unbelievable things. Today, hauled into court, the judge realizes that the matters do not concern civil law, but religious law. Even the beating of a man in front of the judge is not beyond what they will do.

Today we see just what Mary, the Mother of Jesus does, after she has accepted being the Mother of God, agreeing to God’s plan. And what is that? She goes to help Elizabeth, and they share the great experiences of God they share.
