The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Lectura del libro del Deuteronomio

Si alguno de tus parientes pasa necesidad en cualquier comunidad de la tierra que Yahveh, tu Dios, te da, no endurecerás tu corazón ni cerrarás tu mano contra tu pariente necesitado.

Por el contrario, abrirás libremente tu mano y prestarás generosamente lo que baste para satisfacer esa necesidad. 

Cuídate de no abrigar el mezquino pensamiento: «Se acerca el año séptimo, el año de la remisión», para que no des nada a tu pariente necesitado, y tu pariente clame a Yahveh contra ti y seas considerado culpable.

A reading from the book of Deuteronomy

If one of your kindred is in need in any community in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand against your kin who is in need.

Instead, you shall freely open your hand and generously lend what suffices to meet that need.

Be careful not to entertain the mean thought, “The seventh year, the year of remission, is near,” so that you would begrudge your kin who is in need and give nothing, and your kin would cry to the LORD against you and you would be held guilty.

When you give, give generously and not with a stingy heart; for that, the LORD, your God, will bless you in all your works and undertakings.

The land will never lack for needy persons; that is why I command you: “Open your hand freely to your poor and to your needy kin in your land.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations^* will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 

He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ 

Then the righteous^* will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ 

And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ 

Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 

a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ 

Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’

Homily / Homilía

To understand Pope Francis, it is important to look at what he said and what he did. One major theme of his time as pope was mercy. He understood his need for God’s mercy, and he assured us that God is a God of mercy. 

“Together with faith, Therese . . . had a “boundless trust in God’s infinite mercy: “confidence that must lead us to Love”. She experienced the complete trust of a child that finds refuge, unafraid, in the embrace of its father and mother. For Therese, the one God is revealed above all else in his mercy, which is the key to understanding everything else that can be said of him.”

The last encyclical of Pope Francis, Dilexit Nos, focused on the heart. “We need to start speaking once more about the heart and thinking about this place where every person, of every class and condition, creates a synthesis, where they encounter the radical source of their strengths, convictions, passions and decisions. Yet, we find ourselves immersed in societies of serial consumers who live from day to day, dominated by the hectic pace and bombarded by technology, lacking in the patience needed to engage in the processes that an interior life by its very nature requires.”

Pope Francis emphasized a personal relationship with Jesus. “Many a page of the Gospel illustrates how attentive Jesus was to individuals and above all to their problems and needs. We are told that, “when he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless” (Mt 9:36). Whenever we feel that everyone ignores us, that no one cares what becomes of us, that we are of no importance to anyone, he remains concerned for us.”

We must consider the needs of all. Pope Francis challenged us to remember the most vulnerable. From his encyclical Fratelli Tutti, “Amid the fray of conflicting interests, where victory consists in eliminating one’s opponents, how is it possible to raise our sights to recognize our neighbors or to help those who have fallen along the way? A plan that would set great goals for the development of our entire human family nowadays sounds like madness.”

Our concern must be consistent. In Laudato Si, “A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted.”

In all this, Pope Francis recognized God brings us hope, not in a naïve optimism, but in the belief that God saves. He lived out the profound responsibility to the poor that so much of the bible teaches. Despite the tunnel vision of the Church that some of us can be prone to, Pope Francis recognized the Church is worldwide and universal. And he reached out to the universal Church. Let us follow his example and the example of Jesus.
