A mess until it wasn’t: Homily for Monday, July 22, 2024

Today we celebrate St. Mary Magdalene, who is really an amazing woman. Her life was a mess, then she met Jesus, and then she was all in. Now in a way, she was all in because that’s the way she lived her life. Whether it was sin or grace, she was all in.

A mess until it wasn’t

Today we celebrate St. Mary Magdalene, who is really an amazing woman. Her life was a mess, then she met Jesus, and then she was all in. Now in a way, she was all in because that’s the way she lived her life. Whether it was sin or grace, she was all in.

But we know that Jesus did amazing things for her. And Jesus does amazing things for you and for me as well. The Gospel tells us today that Mary was the first to encounter Jesus. We know that. She was the first to tell the apostles about Jesus and about the fact that he was risen.

The first reading tells us that this encounter that she had and the encounter that we had in the sacraments when we were baptized is not simply a small symbolic gesture. It completely changes who we are. We’re not our old selves. We’re new creations. We’re raised in life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

We’re offered this gift of eternal salvation. We’re given a glimpse at how much it is that Jesus loves us and how much it is that in cooperation with that love, we ourselves can do great things. But Mary Magdalene gives us a very important task as well. She didn’t keep this to herself and neither should we. We in fact have to share that Jesus has changed our lives, that Jesus has made us new creations, and that what he’s done for us, he longs to do for all.
