Today we begin the Great Three Days. These are the most important days of the Church year. This is because these three days validate all the other days of the liturgical year. Jesus is the person he claims to be. And these days are our guarantee. Why?
Because at the heart of these days is the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. It is what we celebrate. At Christmas, we celebrate Jesus, the Divine Son of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity becoming fully human as well. Becoming like us in all things but sin so that we can become more and more like God in how we live.
The life, death and resurrection of Jesus, the threefold parts of the Paschal Mystery, are celebrated in a threefold Easter Triduum. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter form one celebration, three days that are really one, just as our God is three persons and really one.
On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the life of Jesus. It is the way in which we celebrate the continuing presence of Jesus today. On Good Friday, we celebrate his suffering and death, the ultimate and unconditional act of God’s love for each one of us, so that we can be saved. On Easter, we celebrate the divine confirmation of God’s promise, so that love conquers death, love conquers sin, and God’s abiding presence conquers absolute loneliness.
And these days also provide us with a challenge we can only fulfill in God’s grace. To receive Jesus fully present in the Eucharist demands we serve others as he serves us. If we are to be disciples of Jesus, we must sacrifice like him for the sake of the salvation of others. And if we are faithful in discipleship, we become authentic witnesses to the power of a loving relationship with Jesus.
Let us pray.
Dear Jesus, in your every action on earth, you were about the Father’s will. In following the Father’s will, you remind us of your powerful desire to save us from sin. Send forth your grace, so that we may live in you and rise with you. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.
