Our Father

The Our Father is one of the more ancient prayers of the Catholic Church. In fact, Jesus, in the gospell of Matthew, gave us this prayer to use.

The Our Father is one of the more ancient prayers of the Catholic Church. In fact, Jesus, in the gospel of Matthew, gave us this prayer to use.

Here is the text from Saint Matthew’s gospel (6:9-13). Notice it is different than the traditional prayer below.

“This is how you are to pray:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors;

and do not subject us to the final test,

but deliver us from the evil one.

If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.

But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.

Our Father

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day
our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
